Some of my work is about translation: taking a signal from one domain and letting it speak in another. Exhibited Music, with Ensemble KNM Berlin, was translation in its most intimate form.
The KNM Quartett, Theodor Flindell, Meike-Lu Schneider, Kirstin Maria Pientka and Cosima Gerhardt, performed Brian Ferneyhough’s String Quartet No. 2, music of extraordinary density. While they played, body sensors read their physiological states, and my Bio Sensor Imaging System rendered that data live into the concert. You heard the music and saw, at the same time, what it took to play it.
We performed it at Teilelager in Berlin at the end of June, and in late September it returned there as an installation. Listen to a conversation I had with Thomas Bruns in the Klangcut podcast about my role in this project:
Thanks to Thomas Bruns for the artistic direction and video, Natalia Orendain del Castillo for the stage design, the haubrok foundation, and the four musicians. This kind of translation, from data into something we can perceive, is never far from the instruments I make.
